Agencies working together to reopen Picton roads
Getting the roads reopened and traffic flowing smoothly is a matter of urgency for the community, iReX Programme Director David Warburton said.
KiwiRail is working with Council, Marlborough Roads and New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) Waka Kotahi to get the roads open safely and quickly.
If you want to know more the iReX wind down and road reopenings, Doug Carter from the KiwiRail construction team will be at the Cuppa with your Councillor session at the Picton Library from 10am to midday tomorrow.
The KiwiRail team has made a good start on Dublin Street which is reopening in two phases. Work is underway to reopen west of Market Street, including Market Street and the side streets. The team is currently reinstating the kerbs and pathways; in the next two weeks a drainage pipe will be installed and then it’s resurfacing and reopening which is on track for end of April.
East of Market Street will follow and includes reinstating the level crossing to current safety standards with new barrier arms and a better and safer pedestrian crossing.
Because there’s more design work and equipment to source and install, KiwiRail do not have a firm date for the reopening of the East Market Street section, but is aiming for August.
KiwiRail is also working with Council, Marlborough Roads and NZTA on decisions around the rest of the transport network, including Broadway. More information about these decisions will be shared in the coming months.
In the next few months, Port Marlborough will start demolition of the old terminal building and will be undertaking work in that area of the port including tidying and reconfiguring the car parking to accommodate short and long-term vehicles.
Interislander will continue to operate from the new temporary terminal for the foreseeable future until more permanent arrangements are made.
