Blenheim and Wairau

The Taylor River Trail is an ideal easy mountain bike ride that extends from the Burlegh bridge to the Taylor Dam Reserve. This trail connects with the Wither Hills Farm Park and offers a range of Mountain Bike trials right at Blenheim's back door. The Rifle Range Trail is an easy single track ride that runs along the base of the hills between Taylor Pass Road and Redwood Street.

Mountain biking. The 40 hectare Mountain Bike Park offers a variety of rides and the Mt Vernon Traverse is a challenging ride over the ridgelines. Conders Bend Mountain Bike Park is located next to the Wairau River near Renwick with approximately 6 kms of curved largely flat track. The Parks location is shown on the "Discover the Wairau" brochure.

There are several mountain bike rides along the base of or within Victoria Domain and the Queen Charlotte Track and numerous others within the Marlborough Sounds are managed by the Department of Conservation.

Mountain Bike Grading

Easy 1 Beginner/Grade 1 Beginner/Grade 1: Fairly flat, wide, smooth track or gravel road.
2 Easy/Grade 2 Easy/Grade 2: Mostly flat with some gentle climbs on smooth track with easily avoidable obstacles such as rocks and potholes.
Moderate
3 Intermediate/Grade 3 Intermediate/Grade 3: Steep slopes and/or avoidable obstacles, possibly on narrow track and/or with poor traction. There may be exposure at the track’s outside edge.
4 Advanced/Grade 4 Advanced/Grade 4: A mixture of long, steep climbs, narrow track, poor traction and obstacles that are difficult to avoid or jump over. Generally exposed at the track’s outside edge. Most riders will find some sections easier to walk.
Hard 5 Expert/Grade 5 Expert/Grade 5: Technically challenging. Giant climbs, narrow track and numerous hazards including dangerous drop-offs, sharp corners and difficult obstacles. Expect walking and possibly bike carrying.
6 Extreme/Grade 6 Extreme/Grade 6: Downhill/free ride specific tracks. Extremely steep sections with large drop-offs and other unavoidable obstacles. May include man-made structures and jumps.
