Southern Springs

The Southern Springs occupy the area between Woodbourne and Blenheim, with northern and southern boundaries in the region of Middle Renwick Road and New Renwick Road.

Its name is derived from the many groundwater-fed springs which rise in the area. For example, Doctors Creek relies on groundwater inflow through its bed.

The area is water-abundant for much of the year, but is susceptible to drought in some summer seasons. Under dry conditions groundwater from this area maintains Taylor River flow to the High Street bridge in Blenheim.

Other springs in the area include: Yelverton Stream, Old Fairhall Creek and Camerons Creek.

Traditionally a mixed farming area, the main agricultural crop is now vineyard. Most rural residential blocks still rely on groundwater for drinking, except the eastern area which is supplied from Blenheim Municipal supply.
