Fire
Fire has the potential to threaten anyone, regardless whether you live in an urban or rural area, or whether you are at home, work or enjoying one of the recreational opportunities Marlborough has to offer.
In rural areas immediate help from fire brigades is usually much further away so response times to rural properties may be longer.
Fires in rural areas can cause loss of life, home, livelihood and possessions. They can destroy the natural environment and the many ecosystems.
Sometimes a permit is required for a fire. Permit requirements depend on the burn location and what the fire season is; they can take up to 48 hours to process. There is no charge for a fire permit.
Changes to fire seasons are announced on local radio, in local newspaper or information is available directly from the relevant rural fire authority or from Marlborough District Council. Failure to obtain a permit for a fire is an offence against the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 carrying a $1,500 fine.
Fire Permits are required during restricted fire seasons in all areas.
