Small Townships Programme

The Marlborough District Council has included funding in the 2015 – 2025 Long Term Plan to provide an integrated planning and design process for improving public amenities in small townships as part of implementing the Growing Marlborough Strategy. Projects that provide for new or improved outdoor public spaces are eligible to be included in this programme. Examples of the types of projects are community spaces, recreation areas, landscaping and streetscape upgrades to improve walking and cycling.

The purpose of this programme is to:

  • Design a livable town with an attractive central space
  • Allow freedom of movement, connectivity and accessibility
  • Strengthen a sense of place and unique identity
  • Enhance the use, enjoyment and pride in outdoor public spaces

The Community Projects Fund 2017

Ten percent (around $50,000) of each annual budget will be available for small, low cost infrastructure projects on outdoor public spaces. Any organisation or group that represents a township or community in Marlborough can put forward projects for this fund, excluding Blenheim and Picton/Waikawa as these are funded separately and Havelock, Renwick, Wairau Valley, Spring Creek and Ward, which are currently on the full Small Townships Programme. More information is available at Community Projects Fund.

Applications for funding in 2017 have closed. Applicants will be notified by 21 April 2017.

The Township Plan

Using the Smart and Connected framework, Council will link the aspirations of communities with good outdoor public space design. These will come together in a Township Plan for each community to create the kind of place where people want to live, work and play. Small, easy to achieve projects will be implemented as soon as possible through Stage One. The planning and delivery of Stage Two of the Plan is likely to take around two to three years to complete for each town.
