Wairau Bar
This site is estuarine and is situated just out of Blenheim. It is used predominantly for fishing and whitebaiting. The surrounding area is rocky and uneven, but there is a small sandy beach where children play and paddle. Wind surfing and kayaking occur, and duck shooting takes place further up into the lagoon area.
The site is impacted by discharge from the Blenheim oxidation ponds at an upstream site in the Opawa River. The lagoon area is a significant bird nesting and migration site. The average yearly rainfall for the area is 1,000mm.
