NZTM Coordinate Projection Change

On 1 January 2010 Marlborough District Council’s mapping systems were changed to the LINZ New Zealand Transverse Mercator (NZTM) projection.

Council has now updating its mapping and database systems to accept coordinates directly from the new national NZTM coordinate system. The coordinates are distinctly different in their appearance and will be displayed on Council’s internal and external mapping.

Please ensure any correspondence, such as coordinate information supply to Council, is provided in terms of the NZTM coordinate system. Also, where latitude and longitude values are provided, these should be accompanied by details of the format and datum. The format will be either degrees/minutes/seconds or degrees/minutes or decimal degrees. The datum will vary but most likely be WGS84, NZGD2000 or NZGD1949 etc.

Please consider how this change may affect your organisation or processes. There are coordinate conversion methods available through the LINZ website or modern GIS and CAD programmes.

LINZ has said this is one of the most significant changes to New Zealand's official topographical maps since the 1930s, with a new map series, Topo50, launched on 23 September 2009. To find out more about these changes please visit the LINZ website: www.linz.govt.nz

If you have any questions regarding the supply of coordinate information to Council please contact Council.
