How Are Rates Categorised and Calculated
The Marlborough district is divided into six geographic areas for the purpose of funding general works and services. These areas are:
- Blenheim
- Blenheim vicinity
- Picton
- Picton vicinity
- General rural
- Administrative rural
All properties are rated for the following general-type rates and charges:
- a geographic works and services rate (for the appropriate area based on land value)
- a geographic works and services charge (for the appropriate area)
The amount levied for each is determined by the benefit allocation for each activity/function. Council also levies targeted rates/charges for particular areas of benefit, specifically:
- sewerage
- water
- stormwater
- refuse collection
- river protection
- roading improvements
- debt servicing
- tourism
Examples of the indicative rating impact of the 2010-11 rate levies on a number of benchmark properties, together with summary detail on each rate/charge, are included in the Council's Annual Plan, which is available free of charge from Council offices.
