The Marlborough District Council acknowledges social and community development as an important part of the health and well-being of Marlborough's community. The council has an integral role in ensuring that services and facilities are provided to meet the communities' recreational, cultural, library and social needs. The Council does this through the development and on-going provision of services, and by assisting other organisations in service provision or establishment.
Marlborough has a strong history of community participation in recreation and sports. The Council meets these ever-increasing demands by providing and maintaining parks, reserves, walkways, sportsgrounds and sporting facilities. In addition, it provides funding and assistance to organisations to provide sports and recreation programmes, while continuing a partnership with the Hillary Commission to ensure sport funding is available to the local community.
Animal Control (dogs, etc) is a related function. It is undertaken by contractors.
