Taylor RiverA surface water quality monitoring programme was set up by the Marlborough District Council in 1996. This comprised monthly, quarterly and annual monitoring of the Awatere, Taylor/Opawa/Omaka, Wairau, Rai/Pelorus Rivers and Spring Creek over the ensuing five years. Currently monthly monitoring of the Omaka, Opawa and Taylor Rivers are being undertaken. Recreational water quality is monitored at popular freshwater bathing sites during November to February.

Reports have recently been prepared on:

  • the Awatere River intensive monitoring
  • the Omaka/Opawa/Taylor Rivers intensive monitoring
  • the Pelorus/Rai Rivers intensive monitoring
  • the monitoring of freshwater bathing sites for 1997, 1998 and 1999, 2000 and 2001
  • the impact of stormwater discharges from urban and rural Blenheim on water quality in the Taylor and Opawa Rivers
  • the ecology of Spring Creek - Awarua
