Groundwater is an important resource in Marlborough, given the reliance on its use for purposes such as drinking water for communities and stock, crop irrigation and industrial processing.
Monitoring
The Marlborough District Council maintains a network of 20 wells for electronic recording of groundwater levels and salinity. Levels are monitored manually, as required, at numerous other wells. Water quality is also extensively monitored.
Monitoring information helps the council protect the resource from over-exploitation or contamination. The information is also used in the day-to-day management of water shortage and contamination issues.
Mapping
The Marlborough District Council retains a database of wells drilled in the region. The details and position of these wells are available on the Council's e-map website.
