The Marlborough District Council administers eight cemeteries throughout the district.
Cemetery Locations
Fairhall
Fairhall Cemetery has been open for 30 years and is Marlborough's principal cemetery; providing for traditional lawn and cremation-beam burials, along with picturesque gardens for memorial ashes. With a backdrop of the Wither Hills and surrounded by vineyards, the cemetery's expansive lawns and established plantings give it an attractive, restful, park-like character. The cemetery is 20 minutes drive from the centre of Blenheim, along New Renwick Road.
Omaka
Omaka Cemetery is a closed cemetery of historic importance, with graves dating back to settlement in the Wairau basin. Burials nowadays only take place in reserved or family plots.
Tuamarina
Tuamarina Cemetery is Marlborough's most historic cemetery. It is the home of a memorial recognising a local historic incident and a commemorative monument to local residents who were lost in the Boer War. Set high on a hillside overlooking Tuamarina township and the greater Wairau basin, the cemetery offers a commanding view over much of Marlborough.
Picton
Picton Cemetery dates back to the early settlement of the Marlborough Sounds. The historical sections of the cemetery complement the modern extension which will meet Picton community needs for the next half-century.
Havelock
Havelock Cemetery is an historic cemetery with a commanding view. Some grave fixtures are unique within New Zealand and well worth viewing if you are in the region
Rural Cemeteries
In conjunction with the local communities of Havelock, Seddon, Ward and Mahakipawa, the Council administers four other, smaller cemeteries in the district.
Cemetery Enquiries
The Council maintains records for each cemetery. Enquiries of any nature should be made to either Council or a Funeral Director.
