Through the efforts of Mayor Leggett, in conjunction with Minister for Emergency Management Kieran McAnulty, the initial funding was announced during the minister’s visit on Monday 22 August.
The fund will be primarily available to Marlborough District Council area residents who have suffered personal financial or emotional hardship because of the August 2022 Marlborough rain event.
People wishing to donate to this fund can do so online via online banking. Simply add the Marlborough District Council’s account number and include ‘Mayoral Fund’ as a reference.

Mayoral Relief Fund Personal
Priority will be given to
- Essentials for daily life (not loss of earnings)
- Costs not covered by insurance or other funds such as MSD (water transport costs already receiving the subsidy are not eligible)
- Where there is financial burden due to the storm event.
Criteria and relevant information
- Applicants are not eligible if they have funding assistance from another source for the same item/s
- One application per household can be made. You can only apply for funding once
- The fund does not cover businesses affected by the storm event or cover business loss of earnings or related costs
- When funds are awarded, they must be used for the purpose outlined in the application submitted
- Council will meet its legislative obligations under the Privacy Act 2020 with regard to information provided in the application.
- Please provide evidence of costs with your application.

Process for all funds
- Applications are made online via Marlborough District Council.
- The Mayor along with a special committee will meet to consider all applications and make decisions.
- Applicants will then be advised of the outcome via email and payment made into the bank account the following week.
