Adult Cycle Skills Workshop

Want to brush up your bike handling skills or find out how to navigate in traffic?

Get cycle savvy with Marlborough District Council’s adult cycle skills workshops. If you’re new to cycling, haven’t been on a bike for a while, or just need a bit of extra confidence negotiating traffic on the road, then these free workshops are for you! It doesn’t matter what your riding ability is, these practical, pedal turning sessions are designed to give you the skills and confidence for riding on and off the road.

This year we’re offering three different types of cycle skills training (bronze, silver and gold) to meet all your cycling needs.

The three different courses on offer are:

Bronze bike skills

27th April, 1st, 5th, 15th May

Silver bike skills

28th April, 3rd, 8th, 22nd May

Gold bike skills

19th May

About the courses

Bronze bike skills - for beginners and building bike skills confidence

If you are new to riding, haven't been on a bike for a while, or looking to develop your bike handling skills, then this relaxed practical session is for you. It's for those getting on a bike for the first time, as well as anyone wanting to practice bike control, including using the gears and brakes, and will get you riding independently with confidence. Our instructors are ready to help anyone learn. The emphasis is on basic skills, enjoyment and confidence. Takes place on easy flat surfaces, no roads involved.

What will I get out of the course?

  • Learn how to check and fit a helmet
  • Basic bike introduction and check
  • Balancing on a bike and pedalling independently
  • Starting /stopping and turning, braking, gears, bike control and for those looking to progress on to the next level, bike handling skills, learning to ride one-handed to signal, look backs and signalling

Silver bike skills - on shared paths and quiet roads

The course will start with practising some basic bike skills (off-road) a summary of the Bronze bike skills course, before heading out to explore the local area by bike. By the end of the session you can expect to have learned skills which you can utilise to ride on shared paths and quieter roads.

What will I get out of the course?

  • An understanding of road signs and road rules and their relation to bike riders
  • Observation techniques and hazard awareness.
  • Improve bike handling skills to ‘look, signal, look move’ when turning
  • Road positioning, defensive riding strategies
  • Passing side roads and parked cars
  • Turning left into and out of intersections
  • Travelling straight through an intersection and route planning

Gold bike skills - on busy roads and complex intersections

This course will include a summary of Bronze and Silver bike skills courses, and begin on quiet streets to cover basic road position and turning left, right and straight through minor intersections. It will then progress to busier roads and cover riding in on-road cycle lanes, negotiating roundabouts, and more complex intersections.

What will I get out of the course?

  • Learn about riding in roundabouts, on-road cycle lanes and complex intersections

Attending Adult Cycle Skills Courses

Please note the following:

  • Registration is required for all courses to attend due to limited capacity.
  • Please try to arrive 15 minutes before the course start time.
  • Each session will be 2 hours in duration.
  • Some courses are weather dependent.
  • Courses will only operate during COVID-19 Alert Levels 1 and 2

What shall I bring with me?:

  • A bicycle and helmet in good working order. They will be safety checked prior to commencing the courses.
  • Comfortable clothing.
  • Appropriate shoes with a closed in toe such as sneakers.
  • Sunscreen or rain jacket depending on the weather.
  • Water bottle and snacks.
