Grovetown Lagoon is an oxbow, or horseshoe, lake four kilometres northeast of Blenheim. The lagoon has become a popular area for walking, biking, picnicking, kayaking, food gathering and bird watching. There is a wealth of natural resources at the Lagoon and physical resources have been developed over time by Te Whanau Hou Grovetown Lagoon Incorporated (the Society).
A community management plan for the Lagoon was developed in 2003. There have been short term work plans written and implemented over the last 15 years however the community management plan has not been updated since 2003.
The society and the Council would like direction from the community as to how the area should be managed. It is envisioned that the new management plan will enable a mix of uses and values to be supported as well as putting in place policy to guide the day-to-day management.
The following table sets out an indicative timeframe for development of the plan:
Request for feedback/suggestions
22 July 2021
27 August 2021
Develop draft plan
August 2021 to December 2021
Draft plan released to the public for submissions
Develop final plan
How you can get involved
You can influence how Grovetown Lagoon is managed and developed by providing some suggestions or feedback. We are keen to hear your views and there are several opportunities to be involved. This includes through:
- an initial feedback period
- a second more formal opportunity to prepare a submission on a draft management plan once that is released
- through hearings on submissions
A brochure with more information about development of the reserve management plan has been produced.
Tell us what you think
There are no limits to what can be submitted on but we would like to know:
