Kenepuru Road closures

Update 17 July 2026

From Monday 20 July, an additional closure will start on Kenepuru Road, approximately 100m prior to Portage Resort. This closure is for the construction of a retaining wall.

On Monday, both the existing closure between Broughton Bay and Te Mahia, and this closure at Portage Bay will start at 12.30pm.

The closures will then resume their scheduled days and times:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm

The closure further out on Kenepuru Road, either side of Sandy Bay will retain its scheduled days and times:

  • Monday to Thursday from 9am to 11am and 1pm to 5pm
  • Friday from 9am to 11am and 1pm to 3.30pm

Traffic management staff will continue to ensure that vehicles do not get stuck between the closure points for those travelling at the lunch time opening.

Update 3 July 2026

From Monday 6 July, the construction closure currently between Mahau Road and Portage Bay will shorten to between Broughton Bay and Te Mahia.

The closure will be in place Mondays to Fridays at the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm

Another closure is planned to begin in mid-July prior to Portage Bay, for the construction of a retaining wall. This closure will retain the same hours as the current closure.

Traffic management staff will continue to ensure that vehicles do not get stuck between the closure points for those travelling at the lunch time opening.

As part of Marlborough Road Recovery works, there are two construction closures in place on Kenepuru Road.

The closures are currently in place at the following locations:

  1. from the Mahau Road intersection to Portage Bay, a length of approximately 14km
  2. approximately 2km either side of Sandy Bay, towards Kenepuru Heads

Please see information regarding closure timings at each location below. Traffic management will ensure that vehicles do not get stuck between closure points during the opening time.

Emergency services will always be accommodated.

1. Kenepuru Road closure – Mahau to Portage

The construction closure will be in place between Mahau Road intersection to Portage Bay (property 2770) for approximately 14km.

The closures are in place Mondays to Fridays at the below days and times:

  • Monday to Thursday, from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm
  • Fridays, from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm

A package of works is scheduled to start in May that will require the shift of the first closure location, located at the western end of Kenepuru Road (the end closest to Linkwater) to start approximately 1.3km beyond Moetapu Bay. The details of this change will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

2. Kenepuru Road closure - approximately 2km either side of Sandy Bay

As part of the Marlborough Roads Recovery Project, the second closure on Kenepuru Road, is now located approximately 2km either side of Sandy Bay Road and applies on the following days and times:

The closures are planned to be in place at the below days and times:

  • Monday to Thursday, from 9am to 11am and 1pm to 5pm
  • Fridays, from 9am to 11am and 1pm to 3.30pm

The exact location of this closure within this section of road will vary throughout the week depending on the progress of scheduled works.

All work is subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. In the event of unsuitable conditions, work will be rescheduled to the next suitable workday, and an Antenno sent.

These closures allow multiple road repairs to be completed concurrently and safely. Closure gates will be in place across the road at each end of the closure and at working sites.

Outside of the closure times stop/go traffic management may be in place with delays of up to 15 minutes.

Traffic management will ensure that vehicles do not get stuck between closure points during the opening times.

Emergency services will always be accommodated.

If the location or timings of the closure should change, an Antenno will be sent.
