Roading Update 16, 17 July 2026

Marlborough Roads' crews continued working across the network this week clearing debris, repairing roads and restoring access as it was safe to do so.

This week crews have worked to reinstate access across the bridge on Tyntesfield Road that was washed out in heavy rain last week. Traffic has been diverted back onto the reformed road and across the bridge this afternoon. Speed restrictions will remain in place until the pavement settles and the site can be sealed. Next week the crews will resume work upstream to remove the temporary bypass.

Awatere Valley Road between Jordan Bridge and Limestone will remain closed due to both a large over slip and under slip severely undermining the road at Cam Corner. A geotechnical assessment has been undertaken, and surveyors have been onsite this week. Further updates on progress at this site will be provided in the weekly Recovery Newsletter.

Queen Charlotte Drive between Havelock and Picton is open. This week crews have worked at multiple locations between Ngākuta and Shakespeare Bays clearing slips and the road is now reinstated to two lanes.

Medway Road is open, road users are advised to drive with caution.

Hammerichs Road, Jacksons Road and the Omaka Ford on Old Renwick Road have been cleared and are open with no caution. In the south restrictions have been lifted on Reserve Road and Ward Beach Road.

State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura reopened on Wednesday. Road users will need to travel with care and should expect to encounter some congestion and delays.

This will be the final Roading Update, unless something significant should change.
