Kerbside Rubbish Collection FAQs
Can I get paper rubbish bags?
No. They cost more to produce, handle and store so Council has decided to use only plastic rubbish bags.
How do I dispose of toxic waste?
Domestic quantities can be taken to the Blenheim, Picton, Havelock, Wairau Valley, Seddon or Rai Valley transfer stations.
For commercial quantities, contact JBL Environmental Ltd, on phone: 03 578 9622 or the Temporary Blenheim Transfer Station, phone 03 579 2061.
What are the fees and charges?
Fees and charges information can be found in the fees section.
What are the refuse collection hours during statutory/public holidays?
Refuse is not collected on public holidays. Advertisements are placed in local papers prior to the public holiday showing the alternative dates for collection. Just prior to any public holiday, information on Council closures and services over the public holiday period is also published on this website. The quickest way to access this information is to click on the large graphic, advertising holiday hours, that will appear on the home page at that time.
What do I do if I find illegally dumped rubbish?
Contact the Council Customer Service Centre, phone: 03 520 7400. Refer to illegal rubbish dumping.
What do I do with my rubbish when I have been boating in the Marlborough Sounds?
Port Marlborough provides rubbish facilities for boaties at the Picton and Havelock marinas. Alternatively, you can take your rubbish to any transfer station.
What refuse can be put out for collection? What is the maximum weight per bag?
Any number of official bags will be collected.
- Tops must be tied
- Bags must be out by 7.30 am
- Bag weight should not exceed 15 kg
- Wrap broken glass and sharp objects
- Garden refuse is not acceptable
- Let ashes cool
If you move house, leave your remaining official Council bags behind for the next occupant.
When are transfer stations open?
Transfer station hours are on each transfer station's page:
Wairau Valley Transfer Station
See the transfer stations page information on public holiday opening hours. These will also be listed in the newspaper close to each public holiday.
