Recycling Centre progresses
Progress is being made at Marlborough’s Recycling Centre following a devastating fire last year
Work is well underway on the rebuild of Marlborough’s Recycling Centre in Wither Road, with an expected completion date of 30 September.
T&D Construction Blenheim were awarded the contract for the rebuild and have already removed all the corrugated iron from the building.
The Recycling Centre was badly damaged by fire in November last year, causing its closure.
Solid Waste Manager Mark Lucas said while the fire was significant, some items, including undamaged iron was able to be salvaged and reused on other small projects throughout the facility.
Significant efforts were made to ensure Marlborough people could continue to recycle after the fire with recycling sent to Eco Centre in Christchurch, to prevent it going to landfill.
Earlier this year a temporary Blenheim site was found and Marlborough’s recycling was again being processed locally with bins placed outside the fire-damaged facility.
Mr Lucas said staff at the Recycling Centre had done an outstanding job throughout the disruption.
“The temporary facility poses difficulties due to size constraints but they have worked as a team, shown great flexibility and maintained a strong commitment to performance and safety despite these challenges.”
There is no real change of service for the community with temporary bins still in place at the Recycling Centre which will remain until the rebuilt centre is up and running.
