Marlborough District Council has been advised by NZ Defence Force and Ministry for the Environment officials that substances known as PFAS compounds have been found at levels above guidelines at Woodbourne Airbase.
Council has immediately commenced sampling of its own water supplies in the area this afternoon to gather testing results. Those results are not expected to be completed until the New Year.
Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says Council staff will seek further information from the government agencies involved and also offer its knowledge to the investigative effort.
“We will work alongside NZDF and MfE over the coming weeks and provide our knowledge of the aquifers, water bores and groundwater in the Woodbourne area.”
