Mayor sees joy of reading

Mayor John Leggett got a warm welcome from pupils at Blenheim School when he arrived for their special "Duffy" assembly – when children were given new books through the Duffy Books in Homes scheme.

More than 800 schools across the country have joined the programme set up more than 20 years ago by ‘Once Were Warriors’ author Alan Duff and philanthropist Christine Fernyhough to introduce books into homes to help raise literacy levels.

After presenting the new books to each pupil and talking about the pleasure to be found in reading, Mayor John Leggett says he could see how thrilled they all were to be receiving brand new books of their own.
