Retiring councillor: David Oddie

Picton’s David Oddie was persuaded to stand for Council in 2010 due to growing frustration with the degradation of the Marlborough Sounds’ waterways.

At the time, Council was in the process of rewriting its district plan and rules - the Marlborough Environment Plan (MEP) - and he felt he could contribute.

A highlight during his 12 years as Councillor is the planning and construction of the Picton Library.

“This has been wonderful for the people of Picton and the Sounds and an aesthetically pleasing addition to the township,” he said.

Councillor Oddie was also involved in the employment of a marine scientist and the achievement of the seabed mapping for the MEP.

“As chair of the Environment Committee between 2016 and 2019 I was involved in the initiation of the climate change portfolio too,” he said.

He was also heavily involved in the MEP hearings and deliberation committee.
