Rural Drainage Channel Network - Wairau Floodplain
Provision of adequate drainage channels and the maintenance of natural watercourses and drains for flood drainage mitigation purposes has been a priority for the lower Wairau floodplain for many years. The present drainage area is best described as an area of some 8,000 hectares generally to the east bisected by the main river systems and drained by 160 kilometres of Council maintained scheduled watercourses and drains. Council also maintains 24 rural flood protection and drainage pumping stations and 320 flood gated gravity outlets to the main river systems.
