About the project
The Market Street Revamp Project is an exciting step forward in the ongoing revitalisation of Blenheim’s town centre. As the heart of the CBD, Market Street is a well-used and valued retail precinct. This project will refresh the streetscape to better reflect the quality, character and vibrancy of the wider Marlborough region.
Stage One, from Main Street to Wynen Street, is programmed to begin in winter (June) 2026 and will take place over several months. The works focus on a practical, carefully considered upgrade – modernising key elements while largely retaining the existing layout.
The design, developed by Rough Milne Mitchell Landscape Architects, is inspired by Blenheim’s natural environment. Drawing on the nearby Wairau, Ōpaoa and Ōmaka rivers, the concept introduces subtle ‘river’ forms through paving patterns, planting and inviting social spaces that encourage people to pause, connect and spend time in the area.
Improvements will include new paving, upgraded lighting, refreshed planting with a strong focus on New Zealand natives, and service upgrades where needed. Existing street furniture will be refurbished and reused where appropriate.
Construction will be delivered in stages, allowing completed sections to reopen progressively. Access to businesses will be maintained throughout, with a strong focus on keeping Market Street open and welcoming. Overall, the project will create a safer, more attractive and more vibrant town centre for the community to enjoy.
