Biodiversity and Biosecurity Perspectives Hub
On 9 July 2026, the Environment and Planning Committee approved commencing a process to create a new Biodiversity Strategy for Marlborough alongside the review of the Biosecurity Strategy and the Regional Pest Management Plan. A sub-committee was appointed to oversee the process. The sub-committee is made up by Clr B Faulls (Chair), Clr G Hope, Mr R McKinney (Iwi Representative) and Mr S Harvey (Rural Representative).
Biodiversity Strategy
Council currently does not have a biodiversity strategy. This will be the first of its kind for Marlborough. The strategy will set out a clear, long-term direction for protecting and restoring indigenous biodiversity, while aligning council actions and bringing together partners to work toward shared priorities. It provides an integrated framework to guide decision-making and collective action across all environment domains, ensuring Marlborough’s natural environment is sustained for future generations.
Biosecurity Strategy
Council’s Biosecurity Strategy was adopted on 14 December 2017. While it is not a legislative requirement, its intent is to outline all aspects of Council’s involvement in providing regional leadership for pest management.
Regional Pest Management Plan
The RPMP has a 10-year review cycle, as required by the Biosecurity Act 1993. Under the Biosecurity Act, the initiation step guided by legislation is where a document that is already drafted is used to commence consultation. As consultation is underway for a Biodiversity Strategy and the review of a Biosecurity Strategy, Council is taking the opportunity to engage with those who would like to have their say on the RPMP before the document is initiated (pre-Biosecurity Act consultation).
