Heritage resources

Marlborough is rich in heritage. It is one of the first sites of human habitation in New Zealand, and an area in which early contact between Māori and Europeans took place. Heritage resources have lasting values that teach us about our past and the culture of those who came before us. It provides a context for community identity, growth, and contrast in our modern world.

The Marlborough District Council has the responsibility under the Resource Management Act 1991 to care for and protect Marlborough’s unique heritage. We do this using the Marlborough Environment Plan - heritage is covered in chapter 10 of Volume one.

Heritage register

The Council maintains a heritage register of buildings, sites and trees.

Preservation and protection

The Council welcomes nomination to consider sites, buildings, or trees not already on the register. Once a nomination is received Council staff will research and assess the nominated item. In order to carry out this responsibility, Council works with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, Tangata Whenua, and the local community (including stakeholders, land owners, community members and other organisations) in the identification of potential historic heritage buildings, places, sites or trees.

The Council offers a range of digital resources on Marlborough's history, including guides to local museums, maps, street name information, and virtual heritage trails.
