Mayor meets with Sweet Peas
Members of Alzheimers Marlborough’s Sweet Pea Group had morning tea in Council Chambers with Mayor Nadine Taylor recently.
Alzheimers Marlborough Manager Catherine Donelly said the group all had a diagnosis of dementia, in various forms and stages. The group meet on a Wednesday with the aim of staying socially active, going out each week visiting local parks, art galleries, other places of interest, meeting locals and having guest speakers in.
“They participate in art therapy, games, quizzes, and really enjoy the social aspect of the day. The laughter that comes from that room is at times rather loud,” Catherine said.
“Making sure that Marlborough is Dementia friendly is our mission, and groups like our ‘Sweet Peas’ is one way that we can make this happen. Just because a person is living with dementia doesn’t mean that they are no longer able to contribute in a meaningful way to our community,” she said.
“The ladies loved meeting the Mayor and they were able to tell her some facts about the old Plunket rooms, which used to stand where the Council is now. Nadine made them feel special and they loved the chairs in the chambers.”
