Council is developing a biodiversity strategy for Marlborough. The consultation process is being run in conjunction with the review on the Biosecurity Strategy and Regional Pest Management Plan.

What is the purpose of a Biodiversity Strategy

Marlborough has special places, plants and wildlife that need looking after. A Biodiversity Strategy helps set out what matters most, where effort should be focused, and how different people and organisations can work together. It will guide Council’s work support mana whenua, landowners, community groups and agencies to align their efforts, and help connect existing plans and programmes. It also responds to national direction, including the National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity. Its purpose is to help protect and restore the natural environment Marlborough relies on now, and for future generations.

Kotahitanga mō te Taiao Alliance

Kotahitanga mō te Taiao is a collaborative partnership working across Te Tauihu (the Top of the South) that brings together iwi, councils, central government, and other organisations to restore and enhance the natural environment. Council is a member of this alliance and works alongside partners to support coordinated biodiversity outcomes across the region. Through its involvement, Council contributes to shared priorities, aligns local initiatives with wider regional and cross-regional programmes, and helps deliver projects that protect and restore indigenous biodiversity.
