Coastal marine rules
Why have these rules been introduced?
The rules help protect Marlborough’s coastal marine environment and give everyone clear, fair guidelines.
Where can I anchor my boat?
Anchoring is prohibited in Category A sites. In both Category A and B sites, dredging, bottom trawling, deposition of dredged material and reclamation are prohibited. Category A and B sites also have a ‘buffer zone.’ Dredging, bottom trawling or deposition of dredged material within the buffer zone must go through an application process
Can I discharge sewage from my boat?
You cannot discharge untreated human sewage within 750 metres of shore or 1000 metres of a marine farm. Only Grade A or B treated discharge is permitted in these areas. To find out more about maritime sewage discharge, please go to Maritime NZ's website:
Go to the Sewage Discharge page on the Maritime NZ website
Can I clean my hull in the water?
Yes, if your anti-fouling coating is within its service life and you clean it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Macro-fouling, except goose barnacles, must be captured and disposed of at an approved landfill. If you see unusual marine pests, stop cleaning and contact Council or MPI.
Why do I need to stay away from King Shag breeding sites?
King Shag is a rare seabird found only in the Marlborough Sounds. They are very sensitive to human presence. Noisy boats or close approaches can cause adults to abandon nests, leaving eggs and chicks for gulls to eat. Staying at least 100 metres away from identified breeding sites helps protect the species during nesting.
What is a submarine cable protection zone?
A protected area around undersea cables where anchoring and seabed disturbance are prohibited to prevent damage. Fishing and anchoring are prohibited within these zones because equipment such as anchors, chains and fishing gear can damage the cables, disrupt essential services and create safety risks.
Where can I find maps of protected areas?
Maps are available on Council’s website from the maps and resources link above.
