Recreational Water Quality Model

Water Quality at most Marlborough swimming sites is generally suitable for contact recreational uses, such as swimming, diving and surfing. However, there can be occasions when the presence of microorganisms, such as bacteria can cause swimmers to become ill. To assess that risk, popular beaches are monitored for indicator bacteria.

Although council takes weekly samples during the summer months, the data collected does not provide up-date information that could be used to decide if it is safe to swim on a given day. At many sites monitored, high indicator bacteria levels are usually caused by rainfall run-off from surrounding land areas. Rainfall information recorded by rain gauges can therefore be used to predict water quality and provide live information to allow you to make an informed decision about whether a site is suitable for recreational use.

The map below shows where it is safe to swim today based on the model. For some sites, we presently do not have sufficient data for the development of robust models.

The model is only available for the summer season (Nov-Mar). Model will be available again at the start of the next summer season in November.

Note that the model outputs only provide information regarding the risk from waterborne diseases and currently do not cover other risks, such as from toxic algae. We encourage users to familiarise themselves with toxic algae and to stay out of the water if potentially toxic algae are present or the water looks discoloured.
