“The
Clifford Bay pitch is a long shot and in my mind a distraction at this point in
time. Redevelopment of Clifford Bay into a port would be hugely expensive. It
hasn't got roads, accommodation, water, sewerage or fuel, all of the associated
things that are needed to support a fully functioning port, beyond rail
infrastructure, wharves, tug boats and ferry terminals ... it is a very big
ask.
The
Council and Port Marlborough are working proactively with Ferry Holdings Ltd to
bring new ferries and upgraded infrastructure to Picton - that process has been
underway for some time and continues.
Rail
Minister Winston Peters has made it clear that the aim of the ferries project
and Picton port redevelopment is to get maximum benefit from our existing
infrastructure. That is the work we are focussed on delivering.”
