Youth Civic Awards celebrate outstanding contribution

The voluntary efforts of five young Marlborough people were celebrated at a ceremony in Council Chambers last night.
Instigated by the Marlborough Youth Council in 2013, the Youth Civic Awards recognise outstanding contribution in community service, leadership, dedication to arts, heritage and culture, and passion and support in the areas of sport, recreation and the environment. They are open to any young person who has done deserving voluntary service in Marlborough in 2024 and 2025.
Mayor Nadine Taylor said, in presenting the awards, the initiative was designed to support and encourage young people who were prepared to put their hands up and make a contribution.
“In the 12 years since the inaugural awards, 34 rangatahi/young people have been recognised with a Youth Civic Award. So, you are joining esteemed company,” she said.
“Each of you who have been chosen for these awards are wonderful role models to us all. I’m sure you will go on and continue to contribute to our community - locally, nationally and perhaps even internationally.”
Mayor Taylor said she was impressed at the wide range of contributions made by young people in Marlborough.
“Every area of contribution was nominated from sport, mentoring, arts, environment, entertainment. I am really proud as Mayor knowing that we have such fantastic young people in Marlborough. Thank you for giving up you own time to volunteer for the groups and organisations you are involved with,” she said.
The 2025 Youth Civic Award recipients are:
Brook Freeth (19) - nominated for Community Service/Spirit
Jessie Gatjens (19) - nominated for Community Service/Spirit, Art, Heritage and Culture, and Leadership
Cohen Sampaio (18) – nominated for Community Service/Spirit, Leadership, and Environment
Ryan Spence (19) – nominated for Community Service/Spirit, and Leadership
Emma Watty (19) - nominated for Community Service/Spirit, and Leadership
