Blenheim chlorination update

With chlorination of Blenheim’s water supply well underway, some residents may have noticed discoloured water.

This is an expected short-term consequence of the introduction of chlorine due to biofilms, which is sediment and bacteria, still being present, particularly in older parts of the network.

Around 1200 hydrants in the network were flushed before chlorination to remove biofilm. As chlorine reacts with existing pipes, particles and biofilm, discolouration can commonly occur. This will reduce as the chlorine becomes established.

Some areas will still have buildup that is slowly being removed by the chlorination process.

People experiencing issues can flush on site by running their tap until it clears. If the problem persists, contact Council with your name, address and contact details so that extra flushing of the mains can be completed.

Meanwhile, three Council provided water stations – at the Rifle Range carpark in Forest Park Drive, Lansdowne Park and A and P Park Alabama Road - are up and running.

The fourth one, at Horton Park in Stephenson Street, will open once the old toilet block is demolished.

The chlorine-filtered water stations sit on a concrete pad, surrounded by grey coloursteel, are open to the public, and have clear signage.
