The 2026/27 Working for Nature/Mahi mō te Taiao grant scheme opens for online applications on Wednesday, 1 April.
Now in its seventh year, the scheme provides $142,400 to support environmental projects across the region. Focused on biodiversity outcomes, projects span predator control, wetland restoration, and other initiatives across public, private and Māori-owned land.
Funding is divided into three categories:
- Habitat Marlborough – for restoring native habitats, boosting biodiversity, and improving freshwater quality
- Protecting Marlborough – for controlling animal and plant pests
- Environmental Advocacy – for initiatives that raise environmental awareness
Chair of the Working for Nature Subcommittee, Councillor Sally Arbuckle said: “The scheme allows groups and individuals to protect and enhance the environment. Funding limits are $10,000 for Habitat Marlborough, $15,000 for Protecting Marlborough, and $2,000 for Environmental Advocacy.
“Community groups or trusts involved in multi-year projects are encouraged to apply for multi-year funding, up to the maximum for each category annually. To qualify, the group or trust must have a proven track record of successfully completing biodiversity projects that benefit the environment,” said Councillor Arbuckle.
Applications must be submitted online by 11:59pm on Thursday 30 April and all applicants will be notified of their results by July 2026. Only online applications are accepted.
