Council invites public feedback from this Monday on two proposed amendments to its Gambling and TAB Venue Policy.
The policy, first introduced in 2004, is required by law to be reviewed at least every three years.
Council has identified two areas where the current policy could be improved to reduce ambiguity and ensure clearer interpretation and application. Public comment is invited on these changes. No substantial changes to the policy are proposed.
The two key amendments are:
- changing wording to provide clearer guidance on if and how existing Class 4 venues can relocate to remove uncertainty for operators and decision-makers
- updating application fees to allow these to be adjusted in line with the Environmental Health Team’s fees policy
Under the Gambling Act 2003 and the Racing Industry Act 2020, Councils are responsible for determining whether, where and how many Class 4 and standalone TAB venues can operate. These decisions must consider the potential social impacts of gambling on the community.
The current policy version was adopted in December 2023.
Council will consult on the proposed amendments using the special consultative procedure under the Local Government Act 2002. A hearings subcommittee of Mayor Nadine Taylor (Chair), Councillors Barbara Faulls and Allanah Burgess will consider public submissions in July then make recommendations to Council.
Submissions close at 5pm on Monday 29 June 2026.
