Demand high for water addressing in the Marlborough Sounds

A Marlborough District Council initiative to introduce water addressing for properties in the Marlborough Sounds has created a wave of applications.

Water addresses are assigned to sites that are accessible only by boat and have no road access.

Council’s Road Naming and Addressing Coordinator Belinda Darrell said the demand received confirmed this was a welcome initiative.

“Due to the high demand, we are currently experiencing delays in allocating the new water addresses given the large number of applications. This has also impacted our ability to process addressing applications across the board including RAPID numbers.

“The public’s patience is appreciated while we work through the volume of applications received,” Ms Darrell said.

Council is working closely with Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) who are providing additional support for the roll-out of the project.

Ms Darrell said jetty numbers in the Marlborough Sounds remained the long-established and important way of identifying locations on the water, particularly for Coastguard Marlborough and other emergency responders.

“There is no change to the existing jetty numbering system. Water addresses have been introduced to work alongside jetty numbers, not replace them,” she said.
