Talented young pianist wins QEII award

A 13-year-old student, Girvan Dick, has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Music Award.

The prestigious award recognizes musicians aged 18 or under living in the Kaikōura and Marlborough districts. They must have passed the Royal School of Music or Trinity College examinations Grade VIII instrumental or Grade VI vocal.

Girvan Dick was selected in recognition of his outstanding achievements in piano. At just 13, he has rapidly progressed to complete Grade 8, passing with 140 out of 150 marks, a very high distinction pass. His examiner praised him for an engaging and stylish performance.

His music teacher Linda Lloyd said Gavin was destined for great things musically and had a serious commitment to music and to joining community music events.

Last year he joined a Bohally band as well as performing regularly at TEMPO.

Gavin has only been learning piano for five years.

“He is an incredibly talented young man who is extremely keen on music, very diligent to practice and has a natural affinity to play the piano,” Linda said.

Girvan has a keen interest in all things musical and has been involved in the Upbeat Orchestra and Marlborough Civic orchestra in the percussion session.
