Reminder about Opāoa River Loop rules

Residents living within the Opāoa River Loop area are being contacted by Council regarding river rules in flood zones.

Structures and works in the river can affect how water flow during heavy rainfall and any structures built within the floodway zone need resource consent.

The Opāoa River Loop area includes parts of the river and adjoining land that sit within the floodway zone and form part of Council’s river management network.

The waterways are critical for managing flood risk and protecting the community and there are rules around structures and activities within riverbeds and along river margins.

The use of river beds is regulated under the Resource Management Act and the proposed Marlborough Environment Plan, and resource consent is needed for most structures such as retaining walls and jetties.

Council is aware that some existing structures are not consented and is therefore writing to landowners to raise awareness and help them understand their responsibilities. In future, Council may review existing structures as part of its river management programme and this could mean changes or removal.

New works or alterations may be investigated so before any work is carried out Council urges residents to seek advice and check whether your proposed activity is permitted or needs resource consent.

Residents are urged to avoid installing new structures or modifying existing ones without approval.
