As part of Council’s Market Street Revamp now underway in central Blenheim, contractors Fulton Hogan are removing the old clay street pavers. These are on sale at the Wither Road salvage yard for $1 each.
Chloe Abernethy from JBL Environmental Ltd, which runs the Dump Shop and salvage yard, said it was great to be able to offer the pavers a second chance at life.
“We currently have thousands of the old pavers on site with more to come as the project progresses.
“Offering these for sale or donation will hopefully avoid them ending up in landfill. They are perfect for home landscaping, garden edges, tree surrounds and DIY projects.
“If there are any community projects going on that could benefit from these pavers please get in touch as we would love to donate them,” she said.
The pavers have been cleaned and are ready to use. They can be bought individually or in bulk.
Council’s Contracts and Projects Manager Maighan Watson said the clay pavers had been part of Market Street since the last upgrade in 1998.
“Market Street’s current paving has been used around many New Zealand towns and cities. However, over time, it has become dated.
“The pavers have reached the end of their life in Marlborough’s busy public environments due to lack of slip resistance and are being progressively removed. Rather than sending them to landfill, it will be great to see them reused locally.
“This supports a circular economy and reduces the waste created by the project, leading to a more sustainable outcome.
“The removal of the pavers is another milestone in delivering a safer, more durable and attractive Market Street for the future, while minimising waste,” Ms Watson said.
The new paving includes a mixture of clay, concrete and granite pavers to improve aesthetics, safety and accessibility for visitors to the town centre.
