New bird observatory takes flight at Havelock Marina

Building of a new bird observatory on the Havelock Marina mole is set to begin, creating an exciting new community asset for residents and visitors alike.

Led by the Havelock Lions Club, the project will provide a sheltered viewing area overlooking one of the Pelorus area's rich bird habitats. Up to 25 bird species have been observed at the site.

Located beside the existing marina walkway, the observatory will offer an accessible destination for walkers, nature enthusiasts, families and school groups.

The project has received strong community support and is jointly funded through Havelock Lions Club Charitable Trust, Council’s Small Townships Programme, Havelock Community Association, Lions Charity and local fundraising efforts.

Following consultation with Port Marlborough, DOC, Ngāti Kuia, Birds New Zealand and local residents, resource consent has been granted and construction is ready to start.

The observatory is expected to enhance outdoor recreation, support environmental education and add another attraction for visitors exploring Havelock and the Pelorus Sounds.
