Interislander transition berth taking shape
Piling is underway for the temporary transition berth ahead of the arrival of new ferries in 2029
Exciting things are happening in Waitohi Picton as part of the ferry redevelopment project.
This month Port Marlborough NZ began piling for the temporary transition berth. Once complete, the berth will be home to today’s Interislander fleet while the permanent wharf and linkspan are built for the new ferries.
Meanwhile, KiwiRail has been carrying out ground investigation works around Dublin Street at the site of the overbridge and modifying the nearby rail shunting area ready for increased freight capacity. Early works for the Dublin Street overbridge will start at the end of the year, with the road closing from early 2027 when main construction begins.
KiwiRail General Manager Project Delivery, Daniel Headifen said with work ramping up, everyone was working closely together to keep the many moving parts well connected.
“We talk regularly with our Port partners about access, moving equipment around, traffic management. All the things it takes to keep progress rolling with minimal disruption to passengers, staff, and the community,” he said.
The Government is replacing Kaitaki and Kaiarahi with two new, larger rail-enabled ferries in 2029.
The project includes upgrades in Waitohi Picton and Kaiwharawhara Wellington, with a focus on maximising the re-use of the existing port, rail and road infrastructure.
