The 2026 Marlborough Youth Council (pictured) have been sworn in at a ceremony in Council Chambers.
Mayor Nadine Taylor, along with Youth Council portfolio-holder councillors Allanah Burgess and Gerald Hope, were present along with the principals of Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges and Queen Charlotte College. Five returning council members from 2025 have been joined by 17 new students.
Community Partnerships Advisor Jodie Griffiths said the 2026 Youth Council represents a diverse group of young people of secondary school age.
“Their role is to represent the perspective of Marlborough youth to the Marlborough District Council.
“They meet monthly to discuss youth issues, gain valuable skills and learn about local government while providing an important youth perspective to Council's decision-making.
“They have already got to work on several initiatives including providing kai at Matariki events and the Big Sleep Out, attending the Top of the South Youth Council hui and meeting the engagement team for the Electoral Commission.
“In the last term, they also helped promote the Marlborough 2055 survey which asked what the future of our region could look like.
“There were more than 300 responses so it was a great example of how Youth Council can help capture the youth voice,” Ms Griffiths said.
