Have your say on Council’s Draft Cemeteries Management Plan

Cemeteries are important places of remembrance, heritage and connection for the community.

From tomorrow, Friday 18 September, feedback is invited on Council’s Draft Cemeteries Management Plan. This brings together the current policies and practices for cemeteries managed by the Marlborough District Council.

Parks and Open Spaces Manager Jane Tito said the draft plan explained what to expect when using Council cemeteries, including information about plots, exclusive rights of burial, headstones, adornments and cemetery opening hours.

“The draft plan does not propose any changes to cemetery services or how cemeteries are managed day to day.

“It provides a consistent decision-making framework to guide the maintenance, management and development of Council administered cemeteries,” Ms Tito said.

Council’s Exclusive Right of Burial Policy is now included in the draft plan, and it is proposed that the draft plan will also replace the Cemeteries Bylaw 2017, which is due for review next year.

Feedback closes on 16 October.

This will be considered by a Hearings Panel comprising Councillors Brian Dawson, Deborah Dalliessi and Benjamin Stace who will then make their recommendations to Council to approve a final Cemeteries Management Plan.
