The revitalisation of Blenheim’s town centre ‘sprung forward’ this morning with the reopening of Market Street to vehicles from Arthur to High Streets.
Council’s CBD Portfolio Holder Councillor Ben Stace said it was fantastic news that this section of Stage 1 of the Market Street Revamp was reopening “right on schedule and just in time for Daylight Savings”.
“We in Council absolutely understand that this period has not been easy for the businesses in the area, including not having the Market Street carparks available. Contractors Fulton Hogan have done an amazing job maintaining as much access as possible during the works.
“I encourage the public to come and check out the completed Stage 1 section and support our local businesses.
“There is plenty of parking available, all with the first hour free as usual using ‘pay by plate’ and remember all weekend off-street parking in town is free too.
“I’m particularly pleased with the overall design choices made. The new streetscape is modern, inviting and very reflective of Blenheim and Marlborough. The feedback so far has been really positive,” Clr Stace said.
Work is also progressing well on Stage 2 of the revamp on Market Street North between High and Alfred Streets.
“The team on site are moving quickly through the construction programme and it is really shaping up along that section of Market Street.
“We know businesses naturally want to see the works completed as soon as possible but many are encouraged by the pace of construction and heartened by how the streetscape is taking shape.
“Stage 2 is progressing ahead of schedule with the reopening of Market Street North expected approximately one month earlier than the late November timeline previously communicated, which is fantastic news,” he said.
Council continues to work alongside businesses, business support groups and key stakeholders during the construction period.
“There’s been great collaborative work including developing social media toolkits for shared promotions and signage boards on site promoting businesses. As well as a video walk-through to help showcase accessibility and progress through the works,” Clr Stace said.
