Free parking on Fridays will continue in Blenheim’s freshly revamped town centre for the month of November.
Council waived parking fees in the CBD last Friday to mark the latest milestone in the Market Street Revamp, the reopening of Stage 2 on Market Street North between High and Alfred Streets.
Marlborough Mayor Nadine Taylor said this had received such a positive response from Blenheim businesses and shoppers that the decision had been made to extend the gesture until the end of November.
From this Friday 30 October, motorists will not need to activate parking meters within the CBD zone on Fridays, including the Alfred Street parking building and the Railway Station car park.
This will continue for every Friday in November up to, and including, Friday 27 November.
“Park Free Friday is Council’s way of thanking businesses and the community for their patience and support during the Market Street Revamp and to encourage people to support businesses in the centre of town.
“We are so close now to the completion of the revamp and I hope this will give people even more reason to shop local and spend time in central Blenheim,” Mayor Taylor said.
It is important to note that parking enforcement will still apply to protect safety and access, including in the Countdown/Woolworths supermarket car park.
Infringements will include expired Warrant of Fitness or vehicle registration, parking over fire hydrants or yellow lines, parking in a mobility space without displaying a mobility permit, misuse of goods-service or loading zones (including overstaying) and vehicles parked unsafely or facing the wrong way.
The final Park Free Friday is Friday, November 27.
