Remember - only rain down the drain

Council is actively working to protect our region's waterways through a new educational campaign focusing on the environmental impacts of concrete and acid wash.

Recent investigations have highlighted cases where contaminants from construction activities inadvertently entered stormwater systems, prompting the Council’s compliance team to take action.

To address the knowledge gap in the industry, a concrete and acid wash factsheet has been developed.

Environmental Protection Officer Brad Knowsley said the resource was designed to educate contractors, companies and public sector organisations on the best practices for managing these substances.

“From 2024 to 2025, six investigations revealed that many organisations lacked adequate controls to prevent discharges into stormwater drains.

“Even small amounts of concrete wastewater can significantly impact local aquatic life, highlighting the importance of adopting appropriate disposal methods.

“Council is committed to fostering a culture of compliance. It has introduced a range of enforcement measures, including education, formal warnings and infringement fines, all aimed at preventing environmental harm.

“The guiding principle, Only rain down the drain, underscores the importance of responsible practices,” Mr Knowsley said.

Since distributing educational materials, engaging 15 organisations within the construction sector, there have been no further complaints.

“This positive trend shows that our collective efforts are making a difference. Council encourages everyone involved in concrete work to stay informed and proactive.”

By ensuring that concrete wastewater and acid wash do not enter stormwater systems, we can work together to protect our waterways and the wildlife that relies on them.
