Catchment context
As each Freshwater Farm Plan is tailored to the individual farm’s physical environment, farming activities and the catchment it is in. The Catchment Context provides the catchment-level information the Freshwater Farm Plans require.
Council is currently collecting the data and information that farmers will need to complete Freshwater Farm Plans.
The Catchment Context is a collection of material about each farm’s catchment. It will include:
- existing information on landforms, soil and climate data, freshwater data, freshwater bodies, contaminants, sites of significance to the local community and significant species or ecosystems
- matters of importance to tangata whenua including the cultural significance of the local area, traditional names of freshwater bodies and sites and species of significance to tangata whenua (where available)
- freshwater rules and policies from relevant legislation such as the Marlborough Environment Plan (MEP)
- what the community value, and their visions for a particular catchment
This information will help farmers to understand the environmental features, current environmental health status, cultural values, priorities in relation to freshwater, and recreational sites that are special in each catchment.
It is Council’s role to provide the Catchment Context for each catchment. As the roll out of Freshwater Farm Plans in Marlborough gets closer, Council will be updating this page and providing relevant information here.
