Total Mobility

What the Scheme provides

The Total Mobility Scheme assists eligible people with a permanent disability or impairment to access appropriate transport to enhance their community participation. This assistance is provided in the form of subsidised door-to-door transport services wherever scheme transport providers operate.

Eligible customers present their Total Mobility swipecard to access a 50% discount on eligible door-to-door transport, up to a maximum of $15 per trip.

In this region Marlborough District Council manages and operates the scheme, with subsidy funding from New Zealand Transport Agency.

To qualify for the Total Mobility Scheme, applicants are referred to an appropriate Total Mobility agency to undergo an eligibility assessment based on nationally established criteria.

An eligible person must have an impairment that prevents them from undertaking any one or more of the following five components of a journey unaccompanied, on a bus, train or ferry in a safe and dignified manner:

  • Get to and from the nearest bus stop or railway station without assistance
  • Stand and wait without assistance for a bus or train (where there is no seat)
  • Get on or off a bus or train without assistance
  • Handle money or bus and train tickets without assistance
  • Travel securely on a bus or train without assistance
  • Travel on a bus or train without getting confused or anxious
  • Travel on an accessible bus if it was available?

If the applicant is successful, arrangements will be made for a photo to be taken that will be used to produce a photo ID swipecard. This photo ID swipecard must be shown to the taxi driver each time at the beginning of the journey.

Further information on the Scheme is available by calling Council on phone: 03 520 7400 during business hours, or email: total.mobility@marlborough.govt.nz
