Bluegums Landfill
Background
Bluegums Landfill is only landfill in the district and is designated as a Class A landfill. It is only available for commercial users. Members of the public can use the landfill to dispose of special waste, but only by prior arrangement. All other waste should take their waste to one of the Council’s six Transfer Stations.
It is engineered to high standards and is expected to service the Marlborough district until 2048, based on annual inputs of 67,000 tonnes. However, we as a community need to divert all reusable and recyclable items from the landfill as we could double the life span of the Landfill.
Hazardous Waste Acceptance
Asbestos
Asbestos waste is only accepted subject to Council approval and the criteria is considered under the Asbestos Management Plan.
Asbestos waste is only accepted subject to a Waste Acceptance Evaluation (WAE) application form that is assessed by Council. This application is required to be completed ten (10) working days prior to the planned work commencing. Please click on the link below to complete this application.
If the asbestos is accepted it can only be delivered to the landfill on a Tuesday or Thursday morning and after booking it in with the contractor on 03 579 6343
Contaminated soils
Contaminated soils are also only accepted subject to a Waste Acceptance Evaluation (WAE) application form that is assessed by the Council or a third party if required. To complete the WAE we require you to obtain testing to identify any contaminants in the soil. These tests are required to be attached to the application.
If the screening tests indicate that the contaminates exceed the limits in the “Screening criteria (mg/kg)” as listed on page 15 and 16 of the document in the link below you will be required to supply a TCLP test. This is to be attached to the application with the screening test results.
If any external analysis is required of the test results, the costs incurred by Council will be passed on to you on a cost recovery basis.

Landfill byproducts
All landfills generate leachate. This is liquid that has percolated through the waste over a period of time. This liquid is potentially hazardous and would have a negative environmental impact were it allowed to enter our watercourses. To reduce this possibility, the landfill site at Bluegums has a liner system designed to contain any leachate. The leachate is then collected and pumped to the treatment works at Hardings Road.
The Bluegums landfill also generates gas as a by-product from the degradation of the waste. This gas is captured and destroyed or burned off via an on-site flare. Information on landfill odours and how these are mitigated can be found in the PDFs below:
The Bluegums Landfill site operates under a Resource Consent. Operational compliance with the resource consent is set out in the Landfill Management Plan. The current Landfill Management Plan and supporting Odour Management Plan can be found below:
If you experience any issues with the landfill site or its associated traffic movements, please notify Council directly by email to mdc@marlborough.govt.nz
