London Quay Revitalisation – Frequently Asked Questions
What is the London Quay revitalisation project?
The project is a major upgrade of London Quay in Picton, transforming the waterfront street into a more attractive, accessible, and functional public space. It includes new paving, planting, seating, lighting, and cultural features, alongside essential underground infrastructure upgrades.
Why is the project being carried out now?
The works are scheduled during the winter months to avoid peak visitor and cruise ship season. This timing helps minimise disruption for businesses and visitors while delivering long-term benefits for the community.
When will the works start and finish?
Construction began in early July 2025 and is expected to be completed before the busy summer season. Timelines may be adjusted depending on adverse weather or site conditions.
Will businesses along London Quay remain open during construction?
Yes. All businesses will remain open and accessible throughout the project. Signage and accessways will be in place to guide customers safely.
How will pedestrian and vehicle access be maintained during the works?
Footpaths will remain open wherever possible. Vehicle access will be managed through staged road closures and diversions, with clear signage in place.
Where can I park while London Quay is under construction?
Alternative parking is available nearby, including public car parks in the Picton CBD. Parking maps and updates will be shared on the Council website and social media.
What improvements are being made to the street and public spaces?
Upgrades include widened and levelled pedestrian areas, improved street lighting, new seating and planting, safer roading layouts, and upgraded stormwater and watermain infrastructure.
Will there be any changes to traffic flow or bus routes?
Yes. Temporary changes to traffic flow and bus routes will be in place during construction. Updates will be provided regularly online and through local notices.
How is the project incorporating cultural and heritage elements?
The design includes cultural motifs, materials, and artwork developed in partnership with Te Atiawa, reflecting Waitohi Picton’s unique culture, history and sense of place.
What is the construction timeline?
• February 2025: Developed design
• April 2025: Investigative works
• June 2025: Detailed design and construction tender
• July 2025: Construction begins (Area 2 only)
• August 2025: Construction ongoing (All areas)
• September 2025: Construction ongoing, staged openings of southern areas
• October 2025: Project complete
